FREDDIE McGREGOR

FREDDIE McGREGOR

Freddie McGregor belongs on any shortlist of Reggae’s Greatest Singers. A veteran of the heyday of Coxson Dodd’s Studio One, McGregor’s career dates to the end of the ska era as a pre-teen member of the harmony group, The Clarendonians. His breakout in the 1970s led to a steady recording career spanning nearly 40 albums. His first track distributed by VP was a cover of Burning Spear’s “Swell Headed,” entitled “Never Run Away” on the Jah Guidance label in 1982. His first LP on VP was Freddie McGregor Sings Jamaican Classics in 1991, which was so successful that it spawned two more volumes. He has 11 albums in total for VP, making him one of the label’s top artists. His hit “Stop Loving You” was included on VP’s 40th anniversary retrospective box set, Down In Jamaica.
